About Reiki
Developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1900’s, Reiki translates to (Rei) Universal) (Ki) Spirit, or “Universal Life Energy” – the life force that animates all life. This is also known as Chi, qi, prana, pneuma, mana, or ka.
The practice of Reiki involves directing the flow of this universal life energy to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It works on the body, mind, and spirit to re-establish energetic equilibrium, which can accelerate healing, alleviate pain, increase mental well-being, and reduce stress. It isn’t about masking symptoms, but creating an energetic state that allows the recipient to work through the source of the issue and get back to their natural flow. The Reiki session enhances the recipient’s own healing powers by giving them an “energetic tune-up”.
Think about how your natural tendency, when you see someone in pain, is to reach out and touch them – to hold their hand, give them a hug, rub their shoulder, etc. – we do this because TOUCH is healing. Reiki embraces that healing touch. A practitioner assists the recipient by channeling Ki energies into the body to help break through the energetic blockages and release that which is no longer serving them.
What to expect:
While laying on a massage table, the Reiki practice involves “light touch” and placing hands on the recipient for about 3-5 minutes in various locations on the recipient’s body to help direct where the Reiki energy flows (primarily the main Chakra points and limbs). This is NOT a massage. There are some locations where hands will not even be on the body, but hovering several inches above the body. Both help focus the energy.
Reiki works to balance energy and bring about positive change (it should be noted that positive change often comes from challenges and the recipient should be ready to handle changes in whatever form they come after the session). Most recipients feel incredibly relax, and often fall asleep, but it would not be uncommon to release some energy by crying. Crying is a natural releasing process. No matter what happens allow yourself to feel what comes up and release what is no longer serving you.
